June 22, 2007: Spotlight on "Dunya" Nesting Doll

Our stunning Dunya matryoshka doll is the creation of artist Natasha Pugaeva. She is one of the many Russian artists featured in Rett Ertl and Rick Hibberd’s book The Art of the Russian Matryoshka, where they describe her work as being “characterized by potal, haunting faces, detailed paintings, and little spots of sparkle that represent gems.” Natasha has had her own studio since 1995, where she helps a handful of budding artists hone their matryoshka painting skills. She works there twelve hours a day, three days a week, and spends the other two weekdays painting nesting dolls at home. No two of her dolls look exactly the same, making each a unique collectible. Something shared by all her creations, though, is the level of skill and amount of painstaking dedication that goes into each doll.
