With the advent of electricity and the lathe, hand carved nutcrackers disappeared from European markets. Today they are extremely hard to find, and when found, extremely expensive or in a museum. In fact, that's where we found this nutcracker--in The Museum of Toys, Sergiev Posad, Russia. The original on display was carved in the 1800's depicting a gentleman of the day. Our reproduction is 100% hand carved in the same village where the original was made, in Bogorodskoye, the most celebrated center of woodcarving in Russia, where the carving tradition dates back to the 15th century.
