Vintage "By the Chimney" Lacquer Box

This is a traditional hand-painted lacquer box with a stunning portrait of a regal looking Russian woman. It is signed by the artist and dated 1999. Not to be missed, there is a stunning mother of pearl detail on the woman's left arm that glimmers when it catches the light.

These works of art are usually drawn with the aid of a magnifying glass and fine brushes made from the tail of a squirrel. The artists who do this extremely intricate work usually live in one of four small Russian villages - Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui or Mstera. Each village has its own four year school where students learn the techniques of miniature painting and the unique style of the village. This box hails from Fedoskino.
