A gallery favorite. This is a traditional hand-painted lacquer box depicting a scene from the iconic Russian fairy tale "Prince Ivan and the Firebird". The mother of pearl inlay is just one detail that makes this box supremely special. Box measures 2.5" x 2" x 1". It is marked on the bottom as being made in the USSR.
These works of art are usually drawn with the aid of a magnifying glass and fine brushes made from the tail of a squirrel. The artists who do this extremely intricate work usually live in one of four small Russian villages - Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui or Mstera. Each village has its own four year school where students learn the techniques of miniature painting and the unique style of the village. This box hails from Fedoskino.
This box is vintage, and as such may have signs of age. Please be aware of this if you choose to purchase this product. Overall it is in good vintage condition, circa the 1990s.
