This is a traditional hand-painted lacquer box with a portrait of a regal looking Russian woman relaxing and reading a book.
These works of art are usually drawn with the aid of a magnifying glass and fine brushes made from the tail of a squirrel. The artists who do this extremely intricate work usually live in one of four small Russian villages - Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui or Mstera. Each village has its own four year school where students learn the techniques of miniature painting and the unique style of the village. This box hails from Fedoskino.
This item is vintage, and as such may have minor signs of age. Please be aware of this when you choose to purchase this product. Overall it is in good vintage condition, circa 1998.
