This is a traditional hand-painted Russian lacquer box depicting a scene from the Russian fairy tale "The Stone Flower" which is the Russian version of "Beauty and the Beast". These works of art are usually drawn with the aid of a magnifying glass and fine brushes made from the tail of a squirrel. The artists who do this extremely intricate work usually live in one of four small Russian villages - Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui or Mstera. Each village has its own four year school where students learn the techniques of miniature painting and the unique style of the village. This box hails from Mstera. This item is vintage, and as such may have scratches or other signs of age. Please be aware of this if you choose to purchase this item. Overall it is in good vintage condition. Measures 8" x 5" x 1.5".
