This is a traditional hand-painted Russian lacquer box depicting a recreation of James Tissot's 1870 painting "Young Lady in a Boat". These works of art are usually drawn with the aid of a magnifying glass and fine brushes made from the tail of a squirrel. The artists who do this extremely intricate work usually live in one of four small Russian villages - Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui or Mstera. Each village has its own four year school where students learn the techniques of miniature painting and the unique style of the village. This box hails from Fedoskino. This item is vintage, and as such may have scratches, scuffs, chips, or other signs of age. As pictured here, the left front corner is chipped in three places. Please be aware of this if you choose to purchase this item. Overall it is in good vintage condition. Measures 6" x 4" x 1.5".
