This style of woodburned doll emerged in the early 90's and has remained a favorite. I suppose no one in Sergiev Posad remembers who created such a pleasant, well-balanced matryoshka first, as many artists have copied her, each executing the design in his or her own way. Despite the variances, she seems to always be holding a fan, symbolic of this girl's aristocratic roots. The quality here is not to question – very dainty details are wood-burned into the blonde wood of the doll (some call it poker work), while delicate white scroll work is painted on the stained areas. The final touch is trimming her out in gold foil accents. Perhaps it is to the pleasing medley of natural wood, stained wood, wood burning and painting, with a splash of color on the fan and shawl, that she owes her perennial popularity. She comes in assorted scarf colors:blue, purple, red, ochre, green, etc. - scroll through the photos to see some of the colors we stock. Let us surprise you!
