There is so much of Russia in a doll like this! A classic woodburned doll from the Moscow region, it features finely burned details on front and back. The gold foil cupolas of the Russian Orthodox cathedrals of Sergiev Posad stand out brilliantly against a striking blue sky on the Russian doll’s belly. The inspiring scene is dramatically framed in gold foil, which contrasts so nicely both with the blue sky and the dark staining of the matryoshka’s shawl. On the back the artist has burned in a floral design that must have taken hours of painstaking work. It is clear that great care and pride is taken in the making of this traditional Russian matryoshka.
