Tale of the Humpbacked Horse Lacquered Box

The Tale of the Humpbacked Horse Lacquered Box offers a dramatic scene from Yershov's tale, The Humpbacked Horse (Konyok-Gorbunok in Russian). The little misshapen hero of the Russian tale is the center of attention in the painting, just as this exquisite box will be the center of attention in whatever place of prestige it is placed. Due to the masterful use of gold foil, as is typical of a Fedoskino lacquered box, light seems to radiate from the box. Although the box is only 4.5" x 4.5" x 2", the artist is able to fit 8 people in fantastic dress around the pony. This Fedoskino box is in excellent condition. It bears the Fedoskino stamp inside the lid, and has serial number 2478 and is dated 1999. Thikhonova's miniature signature is in the lower right corner of the box. Four small legs are built onto the box bottom to protect the lacquer underneath. Lovely! ,
