Prices on the Site
The prices advertised on our Web site are for Internet orders. Prices on some items may differ from those charged in our Catalogs, Gallery, Trade Shows, ECommerce and other sales events. Prices, inventory and availability are subject to change without notice. We reserve the right to limit sales, including also the right to refuse sales. We are not responsible for typographical or photographic errors on the site.
Golden Cockerel makes every effort to provide our customers with the very best in product quality and the closest match to the likeness of any given product image and description. However, since many of our products are handcrafted, product photos and descriptions are provided only for representation purposes. For handcrafted stock products, we can’t guarantee an exact match in detail, finish, color tone, proportion, shape, or other distinguishing feature to that of our product photos and descriptions. For bespoke custom products, the batch consistency requirements are set in the project specification.
Retail Shipping & Handling Info
Immediately upon receiving your order, Emelya, our sitekeeper robot, will e-mail you a confirmation of the order you placed and simultaneously alert customer service. Should customer service have any concern about your order (availability, payment issues, etc.), you will be contacted promptly. Otherwise, standard orders will be processed in 24 to 48 business hours, at which time you should receive confirmation of shipping with tracking numbers where applicable. Rush orders received by 1p.m. EST weekdays are shipped on the day the order is received if stock is availible.
We strive to make every effort we can to meet your specific delivery requirements, however once your package is in the hands of the carrier we are powerless to make changes to your order or control delivery in any way. If a problem does occur during shipping, as in a lost item or breakage, please contact us directly and retain all items and packing material. We may ask you to take photographs to aid in filing a damage claim. If your package does not arrive and we must file a lost search you may be contacted by our carriers to aid in locating your lost shipment.
All shipments originate in Boone, North Carolina. Unless you request otherwise, confirmation of shipping and a tracking number, where applicable, will be sent by e-mail.

Your order will arrive by 5:00 pm Saturday. You can choose this option when placing a rush order after business hours on Thursday or on Friday. We recommend you call us to confirm Next Day availability. We'll do all we can to make it happen.
- Canadian First Class Mail (5-10 days)
This is the cost effective way to have smaller orders delivered.
- Canadian Priority Mail (5-7 days)
The best choice for many, as it's a good balance of lower cost and faster speed and reliability.
- Canadian Express (3-5 days)
This Express service to Canada offers quick delivery to our neighbor to the north.
- First Class International (3 weeks)
This inexpensive service is a great option for those outside the US who aren't in a huge rush to receive their orders; most packages will arrive within 3 weeks.
- International Priority (6-10 days)
This is the best deal for folks living outside the US & Canada. We typically ship Global Priority Mail; most packages arrive within the week.
- International Express (3-5 days)
We will rush your package anywhere in the world. If 3-5 days is not fast enough, and you are willing to pay more, please contact our customer service for a special quote.
If none of the provided options satisfy your shipping needs, please contact our friendly customer service (1-800-892-5409) to work out special arrangements and fees.
Back Order Policy
Our artists work hard to keep us well supplied, but occasionally some items do run out of stock. Items that are currently out of stock bear “Out of stock” mark and the expected date of availability, which may change without warning. Feel free to back-order such items, choosing a credit card payment method; when the item becomes available we will process your order and collect payment, not before. The availability shown online is accurate, however, if someone else is placing an order at the same time, it is possible that the item will sell out. If you have placed an order and the item is no longer available, you will be notified. If you requested expedited delivery, you will be contacted immediately.
As a matter of procedure, we ask that all wholesale customers let us know how they would like for us to handle their order should one or more of the items in the order be temporarily unavailable. Please choose one of the following options at checkout:
- Hold & Ship Complete: If there is an out-of-stock item in your order, we’ll hold your order until all of the items are available, and then ship complete so that you’ll experience only one shipping charge.
- Ship Now & Then: If there is an out-of-stock item in your order, we’ll ship available items right away by the shipping method you chose, and ship your back order by Basic Service when it becomes available. Published shipping rates will apply to each shipment, as if you had placed more than one order. If you are a business account, we’ll contact you to get your approval before shipping any back orders.
- Ship Now & Cancel Back Orders: If there is an out-of-stock item in your order, we’ll ship available items right away and will scratch any unavailable items from your order. You can re-order those items at a later time.
Whichever option you choose, our customer service team will go the extra mile to keep you informed regarding availability and expected delivery times. Sometimes it takes quite a while to make a handcrafted item and then get it here from Russia, so we do appreciate your patience and understanding. When applicable, we’ll suggest close substitutions. And we invite you to call to ask questions about your order or request that it be handled in a special way.
Coming Soon Items
Some items in our web store have not yet been released for sale. These items are designated with “Coming soon” mark and the expected release date, which may change without notice. Feel free to pre-order such items, choosing a credit card payment method; when the item becomes available we will process your order.
Changing or Cancelling Your Order
If you wish to change or cancel your order after placement, please contact customer service ASAP.
All orders must be prepaid by check, money order, or credit card information unless other terms have been negotiated. We accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover and AmericanExpress credit cards. For maximum security, no credit card information is stored at our web site. If you opt to mail payment to us, customer service will contact you via e-mail to confirm the exact amount to be paid, then hold your order a brief period while awaiting payment receipt and clearance.
Discount coupons may be redeemed online by entering the coupon key in the Coupon field which appears on when you clicked “Have a coupon?” link in the shopping cart or at checkout. Valid coupons should have an immediate and visible effect on the grand total of your order.
Order with confidence and satisfaction. All merchandise is selected for quality and performance and is guaranteed against defects. If not completely satisfied with your order, please contact customer service within 15 days of receipt of the order to request a return for replacement or credit.
Sorry, but we are required to collect sales tax on all shipments remaining within the state of North Carolina. We hope you'll agree it's a small price to pay for the privelege of being a Tar Heel.

Nesting Dolls and Toy Safety
Since its invention in the 1890’s, the Russian nesting doll has manifested itself in so many different ways it is not easily categorized. From prized collector’s item, to corporate promotional tool, to preschool teaching device and peasant folk toy, matryoshka has many incarnations and finds her way into many hands.
Given that Golden Cockerel tends to cater more to the collector than to the kid, our products are not primarily intended for children 12 years of age and under. That means they are not broadly defined as “toys.” We do understand, however, that nesting dolls attract all ages. We want our gifts and collectibles to be appropriate for young and old alike, and therefore have taken measures to have many of our less expensive nesting dolls comply with current US toy safety regulations.
Warning: choking hazard.
The primary safety concern with nesting dolls is that many of them contain small parts that might cause an infant to choke. Therefore, very few nesting dolls are appropriate for children 3 years of age, or younger. Please do not let your children put nesting dolls into their mouths!
CPSIA and Lead in Paint
Of secondary concern is the fear that a child might chew on a nesting doll and thereby ingest some of the surface coatings (i.e. paints). In 2008, reacting to illegal Chinese imports, the US government enacted legislation which reduced permissible levels of lead in surface coatings on toys. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), as the law is known, also calls for a reasonable testing program to ensure importers are bringing safe toys into the country. This law, aimed at large corporations, has caused quite a stir among small toy companies who will be forced out of business due to the costs of compliance.
Non-toxic Paints Compliant with CPSIA
At Golden Cockerel, we wholeheartedly believe in the spirit of toy safety regulations and take every reasonable measure to ensure the safety of the products we sell. We have tested the materials we use in production at our nesting doll workshop in St. Petersburg, Russia, and know them all to be lead-free. The paints we use are fully compliant with CPSIA standards. Furthermore, the non-toxic water-based lacquer which coats our nesting dolls provides a protective barrier between the paint and any child who might gnaw, suck, or chew on our products.
The Safest Nesting Dolls You Can Find
Most Russian collectibles are not made in a controlled environment. Traditionally, nesting dolls are products of an Old World cottage industry, where independent artists produce items in their homes using whatever materials they happen to have available at the moment. While those conditions may contribute to a nesting doll’s charm, they make it extremely difficult to regulate production with quality control, or to know if the paints used are suitable or not for the American toy market. Only by maintaining a professional production site, like the Golden Cockerel workshop, is one able to be certain what paints were used in production and to state with any reliability whether or not a nesting doll is compliant with toy safety standards. As of this writing, we are not aware of any other nesting doll manufacturer or importer who can vouch for the lead content in the paints they use.
Certified Child Friendly Products
On the one hand, we believe all of our products to be suitable for children, and would not hesitate to give any of them to our own children. On the other hand, the law requires each batch of toys be tested by a 3rd party laboratory to be sure they are “toy safe.” Such tests can cost well over $1000 per nesting doll set! And sometimes, as with our museum quality one-of-a-kind dolls, a “batch” consists entirely of one doll, or only a few, making it totally unfeasible to test. Since our main focus is selling collectibles, not toys, we have no need to go bankrupt testing items not primarily intended for young children. To help ultra-concerned shoppers know which items in the Golden Cockerel on-line store are ideally suited for children, and the toy industry, we have designated certain items as “Certified Child Friendly.” To qualify for this designation, the item must be painted at the Golden Cockerel workshop (not cottage industry) with paints that we have certified as non-toxic (both for heavy metals and phthalates) through expensive 3rd party testing. Furthermore, the item may not have attachments (such as legs, fins, or ears, etc.) which might break off under stress and produce sharp edges.
Flammability Tests Passed
As part of the toy standards testing, our nesting dolls underwent flammability tests and were proven not to be a fire hazard. Thank goodness!

If there is any dispute about or involving our site, by using our site, you agree that the dispute will be governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina without regard to its conflict of law provisions. You agree to personal jurisdiction by and venue in the state and federal courts of the State of North Carolina, County of Watauga.
We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to modify or replace these Terms at any time. If a revision is material we will try to provide at least 30 days' notice prior to any new terms taking effect. What constitutes a material change will be determined at our sole discretion.
