Humpbacked Pony Lacquer Box (Kholui) by Serov

What's not to like about this delightful little box relating a scene from Yershov's Humpbacked Horse, Konyok Gorbunok?  This Lacquer Box shows the long-eared pony standing beside two powerful horses, as Ivan pleads with the Tsar.  His courtier look on.  Plenty of fanciful detail and beautiful scroll work in the corners.  On the bottom of the box appears the title, city (Kholui), and S.
